What the sea turtle told me to do

Last year I made a huge move from Austin to New York City, guided by my intuition and a tiny bit of insanity. While I’ve loved my time in Harlem, I recently felt ready to move on. I couldn’t decide whether I should move to Santa Fe or stay in New York, and the time to give notice at my apartment was fast approaching. Should I stay or should I go?
In my best Libra fashion I kept going back and forth on what I wanted to do. One day I told my sweetie (who lives in Santa Fe), “Okay, yes, I’m moving to Santa Fe!” And then a few days later I thought, “Why would I move my entire life in the middle of writing a book?” So I called my sweetie back, confused. “Now I’m not sure what to do,” I said. “Maybe I shouldn’t move.” He gave me the best reply ever: “Why don’t we go ask the sea turtles?”
Of course, I should ask the sea turtles.
So ten days later on a working-vacation to Maui we took a break and headed for the beach. I wrestled my fins onto my feet, adjusted my mask, and padded backwards into ocean to keep from tripping over my now size 20 rubber shoes.
I love that moment of transition in snorkeling between being pummeled by waves and sliding into the slippery silence of fish heaven. And now in this underworld aquarium exploding with tropical fish I set out to find my guide.
Soon I saw a big, slow shape moving in the distance. I dove underwater, blowing out through the snorkel and holding my breath, to get face to face, eye to eye.
“Sea turtle friend, I need your help!”
I held the question in my being, and waited as sea turtle slowly turned to face me.
The message was immediate: “I wear my home on my back.”
I surfaced laughing and shaking my head in amazement. Of course, that was the answer.
And so today, dear ones, a few weeks after my conversation with sea turtle, I am the owner of a little 20-foot Airstream home and an bright ocean-blue truck.
I’ve been pondering the idea of getting my own truck and trailer for years, so the sea turtle’s message was loud and clear. Carry my home on my back.
Two days after getting my message I’d located the perfect airstream online, for sale in Tennessee by a lovely woman named Betty, and a 2016 Toyota Tundra in California. The complicated process of buying and picking up both the truck and the trailer and getting them to my mom’s house in North Carolina is a whole epic adventure for another day. Next steps: mid-May I’ll head back to New York to pack up my apartment, give away or move my stuff into storage or the airstream. The current plan is to spend July and August writing in the airstream in a gorgeous campground outside of Woodstock, NY.
Then we’ll see what is next.
I want to take you with me on all my adventures! I’ll be posting on Instagram so if you aren’t following me now come on by…

And a great interview: Lynn Andrews was one of the first authors I discovered on my spiritual path: her books Medicine Woman and Jaguar Woman opened a new world for me when I was in my early 20’s. So it was such a joy to be interviewed by Lynn on her radio show, Kindred Spirits earlier this month. The interview is now available to listen or download:
